September 2006

Rich and Jen Hoffman were kind enough to invite us to join them to attend the Gundlach Bundschu Weekend Harvest annual celebration exclusively for Wine Club Members. Karen and Gary were invited by Bryon and Leslie so we had 4 couples attending the weekend festivities. We all stayed and at the Trojan Inn in Sonoma.

It was a fabulous weekend!

The weekend started on Friday with an Open House at the Winery where there was wine tasting of about 15 different wines varietals and vintages going back to 1976. After the Open House we all met at the Girl and the Fig for a great dinner and enjoyed three bottles of wine that we picked up at the winery. (We all looked in pretty good shape considering the wine we consumed in the last 6 hours!)

Saturday morning started at 10:30 where we enjoyed an Educational Tasting and Luncheon in the vineyard. We learned how to select grapes for harvest and tasted one week old fermented wine. We then were treated to a catered salmon luncheon and enjoyed three more vintages of wine with the three course lunch.

The day peaked at 5:00 in the evening with the start of the dinner bash which included more wine tasting, classical piano music, a great dinner and then dancing to the Hellhounds. We also tasted a special bottle of wine from the 1892 vintage which was stored in the Bundschu house from the 1906 earthquake and fire where their house and fermentation warehouse burned down. The vintage of the wine was not on the label but the printer for the labels was able to identify the range of years where the ink and paper stock was used. This enabled a close approximation of the actual vintage of the wine.

In summary - it was a great weekend!!!
