11/27/06 Someone asked me the other day how many pictures I now have on my web site and I just checked and there are a total of 40,500 pictures and 250,000 total files that now consumes 5.5 GB of disk space. And it still works!!!
8/10/04 Our web site is now 2.2 GB and 23,000 pictures (134,000 total files with the FrontPage overhead). The organization of the web site still works. A visitor can get to the pictures they are interested in pretty quickly and simply (as always any problems, comments or suggestions are appreciated). I have had to break the web site down into one master web site with 9 sub webs to make it quicker for me to update. I also upgraded the server to Microsoft Small Business Server w/ Exchange to manage all of this.
My photography work has progressed. I have added Capture 1 software to my digital darkroom along with the usual Photoshop CS upgrade and other miscellaneous add-ons. I am still using the Canon D60 camera but will be upgrading to a 1D Mark II or the new 1DS when it comes out probably by year end. This photography stuff is a lot of fun. A great mix of technology, family, friends, travel and adventure all rolled into one.
1/5/03 Web Site Update:Web site now is at 1.5 GB of storage and 84,000 files including 14,000 pictures and everything is still working fine. Every time I do these updates I again worry that I will be hitting the limits of FrontPage to handle everything, but so far so good. Everything is working at about the same speed for my web site updating as it did back at 2,000 pictures and the performance of the server because of all the files to you, the users, has not been affected at all. Pretty cool.7/15/02 Web Site Update:Web site status now is at 1.0 GB of storage, 54,000 files, 9,000 pictures and everything is working exceptionally well. 1/27/02 Web Site Update:Now have over 44,000 files and 850 MB on the web site. I may be pushing the limits of FrontPage but it is still working pretty good, especially since I upgraded to a new computer. There are actually only 7,000 pictures, each which requires a thumbnail and an html display page for a total of 21,000 files. The rest of the files are FrontPage files required to keep track of it all. While this does create overhead, if I did all the work of FrontPage myself, I would need to hire several people just to manage this all. Pretty Cool. I need to do more travel to take more pictures.
10/31/01:Updated more photo galleries - Now about half completed. I hope the effort is worth it?
10/15/01:Found new software that prepares the thumbnails, pictures and slide show for viewing on the web. The only program that I could find that creates small enough jpegs, enhances them for the web so they look great and does it all in one pass, and, is also compatible with a dual processor system and the Canon raw format which uses lossless compression. Pretty cool! It doesn't create a multimedia show with sound, sexy transitions, etc, but for quick viewing it works quite well. Let me know what you think or if you've seen anything else better.
